Academic Overview
Concord College UK is an academic school at which high expectations are the norm. Over the years generations of Concordians have benefited from this clear focus.
This same academic focus will be evident in Concord College International School in Malaysia. The benefits of such high expectations are not only in the fulfilment of academic potential but in the acquisition of key skills, good habits and an understanding of how to work effectively and when to work hard. As ever, this clear focus on academic achievement is suffused with the nurturing of a creative growth mindset and built upon a foundation of kindness.
In the Primary School, Concord’s focus on high expectations is embraced in an age-appropriate manner. Children are encouraged to acquire the key skills and attitude that not only support them in the early years of their learning journey but also equip them with the aptitudes and expectations to progress to Concord Secondary.
With this in mind, the curriculum of the Primary School is based on the English National Curriculum and with the added rigour of the Singapore Mastery programme in Mathematics. Overall, children in our Primary School will acquire the foundations that are vital for effective social and educational development, they are encouraged to take their learning seriously while also enjoying the experience of being at school.
In the Secondary School, there will be a clear sense of purpose with a clear focus on not only gradual progress over time, but also on the ultimate goal of being ready to leave school and set out into adulthood. This rests on preparing students over time to be willing and able to take greater responsibility for their own actions and to have the confidence to form their own rational opinions. They must also be able to stand out in a competitive world. This is achieved using the vehicle of a rigorous curriculum based on the UK’s Key Stage 3, IGCSEs and International A levels. The curriculum will be informed by weekly assessments and termly examinations. Beyond the formal curriculum, students will be challenged and developed by Concord’s extra-curricular opportunities and by the Concord Super Curriculum.
Concord College UK has always been an international school and the vast majority of students who have studied there since 1949 have had English as their second language. On this basis, we have extensive experience of EAL. This experience is used to inform and develop EAL practice in Concord College International School. In essence, the more immersed we are in a second language, the more effectively we acquire the language: this will be the principle we follow at Concord Malaysia.
Ultimately, with this combination of expectations and clear development over time, it enables our students to fulfil their potential and look to their future with confidence. The majority of leavers will be applying to top regional and global university destinations. Students will be expertly supported in this goal.
